When we talk about a chain “progressing” we are usually referring to gradual changes in the size or the diameter of the chain links. I am more interested in changes in the shape, such as chains with links which start off with round cross-sections and then develop into flat rings as the chain progresses. Or chain links which evolve into a flat disk from a ring which is standing upright.

An even simpler version – which has an even greater effect – consists of small sections of pipe used as chain links. They have been sawn at an angle that becomes progressively more slanted.
